Long Beach, Calif. - A return to Hermosa Beach for the AVP provided the perfect chance for Long Beach State’s former volleyball stars to shine, continuing a strong season on the professional beach volleyball circuit for many of LBSU’s greats.
On both the Men’s and Women’s side, former players at Long Beach State featured prominently last weekend in Hermosa Beach. In the men’s final, brothers and LBSU teammates Taylor Crabb and Trevor Crabb faced off, with Taylor and Jake Gibb winning to capture their second AVP win this summer, while Trevor and Sean Rosenthal matched their best finish of the season as the tournament’s runner ups.
Brittany Hochevar won her second event on the tour this summer with Emily Day as well, as Southern California continues to be a stronghold for the pair after the duo won the season opener in Huntington Beach.
In total, Long Beach State had representatives in three of the four teams that reached the finals at Hermosa Beach. Caitlin Ledoux also had her highest finish on the tour, reaching the semifinals with Maria Clara Salgado while representing a new stage of LBSU athlete, as one who not only competed with the women’s volleyball program at the Beach but also as part of the beach volleyball program, earning All-American honors with both.
That new wave of players was also represented by Hailey Harward, who along with high school teammate LSU’s Claire Coppola qualified for the main draw as an amateur. Harward went 23-10 on the beach as a freshman for LBSU last season, helping the Beach reach the NCAA Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Other players on the men’s side with LBSU ties that competed in Hermosa Beach included Kyle Friend and Ian Satterfield, who both made the main draw, while Paul Lotman finished just outside of the main draw as he transitions to the beach after playing for the USA National Team in indoor volleyball.
Three more events remain in the 2017 AVP season, while FIVB international tournaments continue which have featured the four semifinalists from this past weekend in the Crabb brothers, Ledoux and Hochevar.
Long Beach State’s volleyball tradition remains strong and will continue to grow with new success both at the collegiate level and professionally.
