Mike Campbell Named Big West Coach of the Year While Eight Players Honored As All-Big West
Nele Barber/Rachel Nieto and Sasha Karelov/Kobi Pekich received first-team accolades.
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State Beach Volleyball was well represented among the All-Big West awards, as head coach Mike Campbell was named the Big West Coach of the Year, and four of the team’s five pairs earned all-conference honors.
Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto doubled up, earning first-team All-Big West honors for the second season in a row. The duo have played in the top flight all season for the Beach, posting a 25-9 overall record, and set the career wins record in the top flight at the Beach.
They were joined on the first team by Sasha Karelov and Kobi Pekich. As a senior, Pekich earned the honor for the second time in her career with her new partner in Karelov. The duo have gone 22-12 on the year.
Finally, Jenelle Hudson and Megan Kruidhof were selected as Honorable Mention All-Big West. The duo have set the Long Beach State school record for wins in a season, posting a 27-4 overall record while playing primarily in the fifth flight this season for the Beach.
Head coach Mike Campbell was also recognized for his efforts in guiding the team. In 2017, Campbell led Long Beach State to a 24-6 overall record through the regular season and didn’t have a loss to a Big West opponent until the Big West Tournament. Long Beach State was selected for an at-large berth into the eight-team NCAA National Championship, and will begin play against Pepperdine this Friday.
