No. 5 Sand Volleyball Returns To The Road Wednesday
March 24, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State Sand Volleyball returns to action this Wednesday, traveling to face Loyola Marymount on the road at 1 p.m. The 49ers previously defeated the Lions 4-1 as part of the Hawaii Kickoff Classic to start the year.
Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount resume their series between two first-year adopters of the sport, with The Beach having won each match against Loyola Marymount. In the earlier meeting this season, Long Beach State won 4-1, as Taylor Akana and Avery Bush defeated Jenelle Hudson and Alex Reid, but the 49ers won each of the other four matches. The contest was very tight however, with four of five flights going to three sets, with just Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson winning in straight sets.
The Lions enter the week 1-4, but all four of those losses come to teams in the Top 5 of last week's poll. Loyola Marymount did defeat Stanford while at the Hawaii Kickoff Classic, dropping Stanford 4-1.
Long Beach State's third flight pair of Bre Mackie and Chelsea Cabrajac remains undefeated in dual match play, now 6-0 on the year, while Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson are 5-1. The two pairs each garnered a victory in the team's 3-2 loss to No. 1 Pepperdine last week, the only two matches that the Waves have dropped in dual competition this season. The 49ers rallied with a win over Cal State Northridge last week as well, and carry a 3-3 record along with a one-match winning streak into Wednesday's action.
