Gulf Shores, Ala. - Long Beach State placed two pairs into the 16-team, single elimination tournament held Sunday at the AVCA National Championships, but each dropped their first match to finish off the 2015 season.

Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac matched up with Shannon Dugan and Mackenzie Phelps of Grand Canyon, and despite 12 kills from the senior Cabrajac, the pair fell 21-19, 21-17 to be knocked out of the bracket.

The Beach had a very close match in the other Round of 16 match, as Anete Brinke and Tyler Jackson pushed Brittany Tiegs and Nikki Taylor of Hawai'i to the limit. After dropping the first set, the 49ers won the second to force a decisive third set, where the top Rainbow Wahine pair edged Brinke/Jackson 17-15 to win the match. Brinke had 20 kills for LBSU, while Jackson added 18 digs.

Long Beach State finished the 2015 season with an overall record of 16-7, and will likely finish the year ranked No. 2 in the nation.
