Volleyball Pairs In Good Position After Day One
May 2, 2014
Gulf Shores, Ala. - Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson started the AVCA National Championships with a pair of wins Friday, while Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic split two matches in the first day of action in Alabama.
Jackson and Johnson earned two straight set wins in their competition against two top teams from the South. In the first, Jackson and Johnson dropped Dagnija Medina and Kim Hildreth of North Florida 21-14, 21-17, and then had an easier time in their second match, defeating Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner of Tulane 21-15, 21-14 in pool B action.
Despite 21 kills from Todorovic, the first match of the day for the 49ers did not go in favor of The Beach, as Loyola Marymount's Betsi Metter and Litara Keil won in three sets 21-17, 16-21, 15-12 on the strength of six aces from Metter.
The 49er duo rebounded with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Taylor Nyquist and Sammie Strausbaugh of Jacksonville to remain in position to capture an automatic entry into Sunday's championship in the pool opposite of Jackson and Johnson.
The top two teams in each pool will earn automatic entry into Sunday's 16-pair, single-elimination bracket to determine the 2014 Pairs National Champion. The remaining pairs will be drawn from the top flight pairs of teams competing for the team championship, as well as a play-in game for third place finishers from pool play against No. 2 flights of non-Final Four team champions.
Pool play continues for both pairs Saturday, as each team will face the other two teams in their respective pool with an eye on the top two spots.
