Long Beach State Loses In Championship Match To Hawai’i

Long Beach State made it interesting, but was unable to get a clinching win in two chances against Hawai’i, ultimately falling 3-2 in the Big West Beach Volleyball Championship finals.

Playing in the winner’s bracket, Long Beach State (13-14) played well but were unable to upset the top seed, Hawai’i (16-8) in the first match of the day.

The Beach grabbed a win in the third flight, as Kobi Pekich and Sammee Thomas started an unbeaten day with a 17-21, 21-11, 17-15 win over Lara Schreiber and Hannah Zalopany. Megan Kruidhof and Morea Wagner also won against Hawai’i, winning in straight sets over Ari Homayun and Hannah Rooks 21-17, 21-19, as Wagner finished with 18 kills in the match.

Hawai’i took the three remaining match in straight sets however. Kai’iwi Schucht and Nikki Taylor pulled away from Jenelle Hudson and Zoi Konstantopoulou at No. 2, winning 21-19, 21-0, and Ginger Long and Mikayla Taylor won at No. 4 over LBSU’s Ciana Wagner and Mykah Wilson 21-14, 21-18. The top flight also went to the Rainbow Wahine, as Emily Maglio and Katie Spieler won 22-20, 21-16 against Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto.

Long Beach State moved on to the finals with a win in an elimination match over the fifth seed, Cal Poly (8-12). Kruidhof and Wagner grabbed the first win in a dominant match against Dora Bellin and Shannon Fouts, 21-6, 21-6 at No. 5. Barber/Nieto also won easily in the first flight, a 21-10, 21-8 victory.

Wagner/Wilson defeated Katherine Brouker and Raeann Greisen 21-11, 21-12 at No. 4, and after an easy first set, Pekich and Thomas outlasted Anna Gorman and Savannah Niemen 21-8, 21-8 at No. 3. The only loss against the Mustangs came at No. 2, where Hudson/Konstantopoulou lost a close first set on the way to a defeat to Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden 21-19, 22-20.

In the finals, the results matched the opening round, as Pekich/Thomas won easily over Schreiber/Zalopany at No. 3, and Kruidhof/Wagner held off Homayun/Rooks in three sets 19-21, 21-16, 15-9. Hawai’i took the No. 2 and No. 4 flights in straight sets, setting up a winner-take-all meeting at No. 1.

Barber and Nieto took the first set against Maglio/Spieler, but the Rainbow Wahine duo recovered and sealed the match with a 14-21, 21-11, 15-11 win to capture the first ever Big West Beach Volleyball championship.

Long Beach State finishes the 2016 campaign with a record of 13-14, and will most likely finish the season ranked in the Top 10.
