49ers Win Pool, Nearly Upset No. 1 Pepperdine In First Day At USAV Invitational
April 20, 2013
Hermosa Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State went 3-0 in its first three matches at the USAV Invitational, winning Pool B against USC, CSU Bakersfield, and Loyola Marymount to earn a chance to play No. 1 Pepperdine in the finals, matching the winners of both pools in the first day of team dual action of the USAV Invitational.
Long Beach State started the day with a 4-1 win over No. 4 USC. Three-set wins at No. 2 by Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac and at No. 3 by Bre Mackie and Libby Fontanilla helped carry the 49ers to their first win of the day. Mackie and Fontanilla rallied from a disastrous first set to win in a very exciting match, a third-set that went all the way to 25-23 before the 49ers were able to become the first team to lead by two points after 15.
After winning 5-0 over both CSU Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount, the second-ranked 49ers won their pool and advanced to face the other pool winner after round-robin play, No. 1 Pepperdine. However, for the second time this season the 49ers were just barely turned back, winning two matches and losing a third in three sets before falling to the unbeaten Waves 3-2.
