Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State looked very fresh in the team's final tuneup before the Big West Challenge. The 49ers handed the Gaels their first loss of the season, dropping St. Mary's 5-0 without losing a single set on Thursday in the final home match of the season for The Beach.
Long Beach State opened up with a 21-11, 21-18 win by Ciana Wagner and Morea Wagner over Meagan Conrey and Milena Popovic, while Jenelle Hudson and Alex Reid won one of the closer matches of the day behind a season-high nine aces from Hudson in a 21-16, 21-17 victory.
Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson clinched the win with a 21-13, 21-8 win in the second flight over Kristina Graven and Natalie Loos, while the 49ers also won at the top flight in an excellent match. Delainey Aigner-Swesey finished with 16 kills and three blocks as the senior and Bojana Todorovic defeated Jordan Shaw and Sam Tinsley 21-18, 21-17.
Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie also earned a win, keeping pace for the team's best record with a 21-11, 21-15 win over Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmans. Next up for The Beach is the regular season finale in the Big West Challenge.
Friday's action at Huntington Beach is tentatively scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, with all four participating teams (LBSU, Hawai'i, Cal Poly, Irvine Valley) participating in round robin dual matches. Saturday will then feature a pairs tournament with two flights of competition.
