49ers go 3-1 in team portion of USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge

Hermosa Beach, Calif. - Tara Roenicke and Caitlin Ledoux were a perfect 4-0 in the top flight at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on the Hermosa Beach pier, leading the 49ers to a 3-1 record in four dual matches on the day.
Long Beach State's wins were important as the 49ers picked up victories over both Hawaii and USC, contenders for the at-large invitation to AVCA National Championship coming at the end of April. The 49ers had three 3-2 wins, with Ledoux and Roenicke leading the way with four wins on the day. Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson also had wins in all three victories for the 49ers on the day.
Long Beach State started the day with a loss to Pepperdine, 4-1, as Roenicke and Ledoux had the team's lone win, but rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Wahine of Hawaii. Ledoux and Roenicke outlasted Jane Croson and Ashley Lee 26-24, 21-13, while Johnson and Jackson also won in straight sets. The 49ers then got the win as Chelsea Cabrajac and Alma Serna defeated Larissa Nordyke and Mita Uiato 21-15, 26-28, 15-10.
The 49ers then defeated Loyola Marymount 3-2, setting up a big final match with the Trojans, who were also 2-1 on the day. Ledoux and Roenicke cruised to a win over Shaw and Urango, while Jackson and Johnson outlasted Duddridge and Thornberry 22-20, 21-12. The 49ers lost the second and third flights, but a 21-15, 21-13 win by Lauren Minkel and Jocelyn Neely over Bateman/Ettinger gave Long Beach State a 3-2 victory to improve the 49ers season record to 5-4 on the year, with three losses coming to the undefeated Waves.
A pairs championship will be held tomorrow between the five Western teams in the second day of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge.
