No. 5 Long Beach State Keeps Championship Hopes Alive With 4-1 Win Over No. 6 UCLA
April 8, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State continued its win streak Tuesday, winning the top four flights to defeat No. 6 UCLA 4-1 at the LBSU Sand Courts. All four wins came in straight sets, while Ciana and Morea Wagner dropped a tight 3-set decision at No. 5.
Long Beach State (7-4) split the first two matches of the afternoon, as Jenelle Hudson and Alex Reid marked their return to the lineup with a big win, defeating Skyler Dykstra and Jennie Frager 21-14, 21-17 in flight four. The 49ers dropped their match at No. 5, however. The Wagner twins rebounded from a first set loss to force a third set, but a late comeback after tying the match at 13 after being down 13-10 fell just short in a 21-17, 17-21, 16-14 loss.
In the end, Long Beach State was dominant in the three remaining matches to capture the win. Janisa Johnson had 13 kills on 18 attempts with three aces, while Tyler Jackson had three blocks and two aces as the pair rolled to a 21-12, 21-6 win over Zoe Nightingale and Madie Smith.
Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Tordorovic also had a big win in Todorovic's first match against her former teammates from UCLA (6-6). Todorovic finished with 15 kills and just one error as the top flight won over Kamila Tan and Jessyka Ngauamo 21-15, 21-13.
Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie also kept pace with Jackson/Johnson for LBSU's best record at 11-3 on the year, beating Taylor Formico and Karsta Lowe 21-12, 21-18 behind eight combined aces from the pair.
Long Beach State closes out its home schedule next Thursday, hosting St. Mary's on the LBSU Sand Courts at 1 p.m. on April 17.
