Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State pushed No. 1 Pepperdine to the limit, but ultimately the Waves escaped The Beach with a 3-2 win. The match was the first time the Waves have not swept an opponent in 2014, as Long Beach State's Jackson/Johnson and Cabrajac/Mackie both earned wins.
Long Beach State (2-3) fell behind early after dropping both lower flights, coming out to a slow start. Ciana Wagner and Morea Wagner lost their first set 21-8, and lost in straight sets to Victoria Adelhelm and Sophie Asprey 21-8, 21-18 despite 17 digs from Morea.
Alex Reid and Jenelle Hudson recovered from a poor start in their match, winning the second set 21-14 after falling in the first set against the Waves' Delaney Knudsen and Katie Messing 21-9, but two aces and two blocks from Messing in the decisive third set led to a 15-3 Pepperdine win. .
Pepperdine (6-0) thus led 2-0 after two matches complete, but the 49ers stormed back with a win in the second flight. Tyler Jackson shook off a sprained ankle to have a huge match for The Beach, making four blocks, 11 kills and two aces with just a single error to help herself and Janisa Jackson defeat Lara Dykstra and Becca Strehlow 21-17, 21-16.
Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie helped keep the drama going with a win at No. 3. Mackie finished with four blocks, and made eight second-set kills to help the 49ers push past Caitlin and Taylor Racich 21-18, 21-14, setting up a decisive match in the top flight between Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic of Long Beach State and Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever of Pepperdine.
The Waves' top pair was able to continue their winning streak however, holding off a great effort from the 49ers to win 21-19, 21-19 in the final match of the day. Aigner-Swesey finished with 14 kills and four aces for Long Beach State.
