Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State pushed No. 1 Pepperdine to the limit, but ultimately the Waves escaped The Beach with a 3-2 win. The match was the first time the Waves have not swept an opponent in 2014, as Long Beach State's Jackson/Johnson and Cabrajac/Mackie both earned wins.

Long Beach State (2-3) fell behind early after dropping both lower flights, coming out to a slow start. Ciana Wagner and Morea Wagner lost their first set 21-8, and lost in straight sets to Victoria Adelhelm and Sophie Asprey 21-8, 21-18 despite 17 digs from Morea.

Alex Reid and Jenelle Hudson recovered from a poor start in their match, winning the second set 21-14 after falling in the first set against the Waves' Delaney Knudsen and Katie Messing 21-9, but two aces and two blocks from Messing in the decisive third set led to a 15-3 Pepperdine win. .

Pepperdine (6-0) thus led 2-0 after two matches complete, but the 49ers stormed back with a win in the second flight. Tyler Jackson shook off a sprained ankle to have a huge match for The Beach, making four blocks, 11 kills and two aces with just a single error to help herself and Janisa Jackson defeat Lara Dykstra and Becca Strehlow 21-17, 21-16.

Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie helped keep the drama going with a win at No. 3. Mackie finished with four blocks, and made eight second-set kills to help the 49ers push past Caitlin and Taylor Racich 21-18, 21-14, setting up a decisive match in the top flight between Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic of Long Beach State and Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever of Pepperdine.

 

 

The Waves' top pair was able to continue their winning streak however, holding off a great effort from the 49ers to win 21-19, 21-19 in the final match of the day. Aigner-Swesey finished with 14 kills and four aces for Long Beach State.

Long Beach State is back in action Thursday, hosting Cal State Northridge for the first time as the Matadors have added this sport this season. The match will begin at 1 p.m. on the LBSU Sand Courts.
