49ers Fall In Home Opener To No. 4 Florida State 3-2

Long Beach, Calif. - The 49ers picked up a pair of wins at No. 2 and No. 3, but were unable to collect the third in a 3-2 loss against Florida State at the LBSU Sand Courts. Janisa Johnson had 14 kills and four aces in the 49er win in the second flight.
Long Beach State (2-2) started out the match in a hole, falling behind 2-0 after two losses in the first two matches. The 49ers dropped the fifth flight 21-13, 21-13 as the Seminoles got 15 kills from Sarah Wickstrom in a winning effort over Ciana and Morea Wagner, while Alex Reid and Jenelle Hudson dropped a close match with Kayla Joyce and Fatima Yildirim 21-18, 21-17 as Florida State (3-0) earned the first two wins of the day.
The 49ers rallied behind a huge effort from Johnson and Tyler Jackson in the second flight. Down 20-16 in the first set to Kristina and Stephanie Pelitteri, the pair scored six straight points to snatch the win, closing out the final two points on back-to-back aces from the senior Johnson. The pair then rolled in the second set to a 22-20, 21-8 win.
Florida State was able to close out the win in the top flight however, as Jace Pardon and Aurora Davis won in straight sets over Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic 21-17, 21-13. In the final match completed, The Beach were winners in the third flight, as Chelsea Cabrajac and Bre Mackie shut down Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels 21-15, 21-18, with the 49ers pushing over the top on a Cabrajac ace, one of seven for the pair in the victory.
Long Beach State will face another tough match next Tuesday, hosting No. 1 Pepperdine before taking on a fresh foe in Cal State Northridge, a Big West school that is entering its first season of Sand Volleyball, on Thursday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on the LBSU Sand Courts.
