No. 7 Beach Volleyball Falls In Tight Match With Top-Ranked Pepperdine, 3-2
An early deficit was too much for LBSU to overcome against the No. 1 Waves.
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State lost its first two matches on Tuesday against No. 1 Pepperdine in the home opener for No. 7 Beach Volleyball, and couldn’t quite pull off the comeback in a 3-2 loss to the Waves at the LBSU Sand Courts.
No. 7 Long Beach State (3-1) took their first loss of the season against No. 1 Pepperdine (6-2), but the 49ers were very competitive in four matches, with three going to a third set on Tuesday.
Flights 2 and 4 were in the first round of matches, and while Zoi Konstantopoulou and Nicci Reinking took their first loss of the season at No. 4, the match was thrilling against Skyler Caputo and Alexis Fillipone. After falling 23-21 in the first set, the duo won the second 21-16. Two aces from Konstantopoulou along with seven second set kills helped the Beach make a charge, but LBSU was never able to get the service point they needed down the stretch in a 19-17 third set loss.
Krystina Adamcikova and Hailey Harward fell 21-14, 21-13 to Deahna Kraft and Corinne Quiggle at No. 2, putting the Beach down 2-0 after two matches.
A win in the top flight by Brook Bauer and Maddy Roh over Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto sealed the match, as the seniors were unable to bounce back in the second set despite a pair of blocks and 10 kills from Barber in the second, losing 21-16, 23-21.
Both of the remaining matches went to a third set, but Long Beach State won both to salvage a pair of points on Tuesday. Sasha Karelov had 17 kills and a block to help lead herself and Anete Brinke to a 21-19, 15-21, 15-9 win over Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez at No. 3. Hannah Matt and Marisa Ramsey also stayed undefeated in 2018 with a 22-20, 19-21, 15-11 win over Maddie Dilfter and Jordan Ferrari to wrap the day.
Long Beach State is back in action at home on Monday, hosting a tri-dual with Missouri State and Colorado Mesa starting at 11 a.m.
