No. 3 Sand Volleyball Grabs Two Wins In First Day Of Season

Honolulu, Hawaii - Long Beach State started the 2014 season with two wins, defeating Loyola Marymount and No. 10 Stanford, but lost 3-2 to No. 5 Hawai'i on the road Friday in Honolulu. Bre Mackie and Chelsea Cabrajac were both unbeaten on the day for the 49ers.
Long Beach State started the season with a tough 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount, with four out of five matches going all three sets. Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson were the only two 49ers to close out their match in two, winning 21-14, 21-16 over Rachel Suavaa and Kathleen Luft. Cabrajac and Mackie rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Caitlin DeWitt and Ashley Maxfeldt 18-21, 21-13, 15-9.
The 49ers' new pairs also earned two wins, with Delainey Aigner-Swesey pairing with Bojana Todorovic for a 21-13, 12-21, 15-17 win over Betsi Metter and Litara Kiel, while Ciara Wagner and Morea Wagner topped Anne Marie Taylor and Hannah Tedrow 21-19, 19-21, 15-12 in the closest match. Alex Reid and Jenelle Hudson lost to Avery Bush and Taylor Akana 21-19, 19-21, 15-7.
Long Beach State swept Stanford in the second match of the day, with Cabrajac and Mackie winning in the only match that took two sets, defeating Kyle Gilbert and Brittany Howard 19-21, 21-14, 15-8. The 49ers won all other in straight sets, including at No. 1, where Aigner-Swesey and Todorovic dropped Jordan Burgess and Lauren Buggs 21-14, 21-12.
Long Beach State was upset on the road in the final match of the day, falling 3-2 to No. 5 Hawai'i however. Mackie and Cabrajac rolled to a 21-17, 21-19 win over Ali Longo and Ginger Long, and the Wagner twins defeated Tayler Higgins and Karlee Riggs 21-13, 12-21, 15-12. Long Beach State lost the first two matches though with Aigner-Swesey and Todorovic falling to Brittany Tiegs and Karissa Cook, while Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson suffered their first loss in two years 22-20, 21-19 to Katie Spieler and Nikki Taylor. A loss at No. 4 by Reid and Hudson to London Chow and Olivia Urban of 21-11, 21-9 gave the 49ers their first loss of the year.
The 49ers finish the team portion of the Hawaii Kickoff Classic with a 2-1 overall record. Long Beach State will compete in a pairs tournament on Saturday.
