Long Beach State started the 2014 season with two wins, defeating Loyola Marymount and No. 10 Stanford, but lost 3-2 to No. 5 Hawai'i on the road Friday in Honolulu. Bre Mackie and Chelsea Cabrajac were both unbeaten on the day for the 49ers.
Long Beach State, ranked No. 3 in the preseason AVCA polls, begins the 2014 sand volleyball this Friday under the direction of new head coach Erika Dillard. The 49ers will compete in the Hawaii Kickoff Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
Long Beach State Director of Volleyball Brian Gimmillaro has announced that Erika Dillard will take over as the head coach of the Sand Volleyball program, effective for the 2014 campaign which begins Friday. Dillard assumes head coaching duties in replacement of Matt Ulmer, who has accepted a position at the University of Oregon.
Long Beach State is sure to be heavily featured as CBS Sports Network presents its coverage of the 2013 Sand Volleyball National Championships, where the 49ers captured the team title on May 4. The team portion is the first to air on Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m.
