Carrasco connects on her clutch home run against the Tigers

May 14, 2012

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Sarah Carrasco has been named the Big West Conference Player of the Week after a clutch performance in Long Beach State's win over Pacific Saturday that allowed the 49ers to claim the Big West Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. It is the second career player of the week honor for Carrasco.

With Long Beach State needing a win over Pacific in the final game of the regular season to advance to the NCAA Tournament, Carrasco (Lakewood, Calif. / Lakewood HS) came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in a 4-2 win over the Tigers. Carrasco entered the game in the top of the third inning to catch when pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley relieved Taylor Petty. Carrasco got the 49ers on the board in the bottom of the third when she singled and then came around to score with two outs on a base hit by Hannah De Gaetano to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Carrasco made it 4-0 when she blasted a two-out three-run home run to left field. The homer was just the second of the season in 12 games at the 49er Softball complex.

In the three-game series against the Tigers, Carrasco went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI. She was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the 49ers' two must-win games after Pacific won game one of the series. Carrasco finished the weekend with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage.

Carrasco and the rest of the 49ers will open NCAA Tournament play Friday at the double-elimination Tempe Regional on the campus of Arizona State University where they will play Syracuse at 3:30 p.m. Third-seed Arizona State and LIU Brooklyn play in the other game at 6:30 on Friday.
