Beach Softball Sweeps Weekly Awards
April 28, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Junior pitcher Amanda Hansen was named Big West Pitcher of the Week, while senior Ashlynn Booker was chosen as Big West Player of the Week as Long Beach State swept the conference's weekly awards after a weekend sweep of Cal State Northridge.
Hansen accumulated all three wins for Long Beach State against Cal State Northridge, pitching two scoreless innings in relief in game one before pitching back-to-back complete game shutouts against the Matadors.
Over the course of the series, Hansen pitched 13 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just five hits in three appearances, while also not walking a batter over those 13 innings. Hansen also extended a personal mark, having thrown four straight shutouts against Cal State Northridge dating back to 2013.
Booker, already having a big week with a pair of home runs in games against No. 2 UCLA and Cal State Northridge, had a record-setting day Sunday against the Matadors. Booker was 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and an RBI single, setting a single-game record in the 34 history of the LBSU softball program with seven RBI.
That capped a week for the senior that saw Booker slug 1.063 with 12 RBI, 17 total bases and four home runs in total.
For Long Beach State, 13-2 in Big West play, the awards continue to expand the accolades for what has truly been a team effort. Hansen joins Erin Jones-Wesley, as both starting pitchers have combined for three weekly honors. Booker becomes the fourth separate 49er to earn Big West Player of the Week, after Ashley Holmes, Karli Sandoval, and Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi have all previously won the award in 2014.
