Karli Sandoval Named Big West Player Of The Week
April 7, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Nine plate appearances, nine times on base. With a 1.000 batting average and 1.000 on-base percentage against UC Riverside, Karli Sandoval was named the Big West Player of the Week for April 6.
Sandoval went 5-for-5 in a three-game sweep of UC Riverside over the weekend, hitting two doubles and a home run while scoring four runs and driving in three RBI. Sandoval also walked three times and was hit by a pitch, reaching base each time she came to the plate against the Highlanders.
Slugging 2.000 over the weekend, Sandoval also threw out the Big West stolen base leader Dionne Anderson for just the third time in 2014 (34-of-37) and kicked off an 11-run inning Sunday with a solo home run, the 20th home run in the senior's career, becoming just the fifth 49er ever to hit 20 home runs.
With her honor, Sandoval becomes the third different position player to be named Big West Player of the Week. Ashley Holmes and Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi have each received the award this season, while Erin Jones-Wesley was previously named the Big West Pitcher of the Week.
