Long Beach State Drops Posteason Opener To Notre Dame
May 16, 2014
Los Angeles, Calif. - Karli Sandoval had two hits, including a double, but a quick start for Notre Dame proved too much to match for Long Beach State as the 49ers fell 8-0 in six innings.
After the 49ers were retired in order in the first, Notre Dame (40-11) jumped out to a quick lead. After a a walk and an infield single, both runners were pushed into scoring position, and both scored on a single from Katey Haus that dribbled just outside of the reach of Cya Neal.
The Irish took advantage of a second leadoff walk from Erin Jones-Wesley in the second to take a 3-0 lead, with the big hit coming on a double by Lauren Stuhr. An error from Sarah Carrasco in right field led to an unearned run in the fourth, and Notre Dame led 4-0 after three innings.
Stuhr continued her big day with a solo home run to start the fourth inning, and Karley Wester and Jenna Simon reached second and third, putting two in scoring position. A fly ball to right field got an out for the 49ers, and a strong throw by Carrasco to the plate appeared to have another, but a ruling by home plate umpire Vince Price that Sandoval blocked the plate, allowed the run to score. An RBI groundout tacked on one more as the lead from Notre Dame increased to 7-0.
In the sixth, a two-out rally ended the game, as Emilee Koerner reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a single by Katey Haus. Micaela Arizmendi then singled, bringing home Koerner to end the game.
Long Beach State (38-18) returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m., facing the loser of this evening's game between the hosts UCLA and Southern Utah. That game, along with the rest of the Los Angeles Regional, will be shown live on ESPN3.
