Meza Dominant Again In 1-0 Win At Hawai’i
Lauren MacLeod drove home the winning run in the first inning.
Honolulu, Hawai'i - One mistake from the Rainbow Wahine was all the Beach needed, as Lauren MacLeod drove home the game-winning run in the first inning and Cielo Meza cruised to another complete game shutout, allowing one hit in a 1-0 victory on the road at Hawai’i.
In the top of the first inning, Jessica Flores reached on an error to give Long Beach State (22-27-1, 10-9 Big West) life with two outs. Flores then stole second, her fifth of the season, and MacLeod cashed in the opportunity with an RBI single to give the Beach a 1-0 lead over Hawai’i (28-22, 7-12 Big West).
Coming off of a no-hitter against UC Riverside, Meza continued her outstanding pitching, and that run would be the only one Long Beach State would need. Meza struck out a season-high nine batters with one walk, and allowed just one hit on the way to her fifth shutout in Big West Conference play.
Meza allowed just an ground ball single in the third inning on the way to improving to 6-3 on the season while lowering her ERA to 1.10.
Meza’s performance was necessitated by an excellent performance in the circle from across the diamond in Brittany Hitchcock. Hitchcock also threw a complete game, and allowed just one more hit after MacLeod’s game winning single; a double from Nichole Fry in the third inning.
Long Beach State will close both the series and the season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Hawai’i beginning at 9 p.m. Pacific Time.
