Meza Throws No-Hitter In Dominant 9-0 Win At UC Riverside
Meza strikes out seven in the 32nd no-hitter in school history.
Riverside, Calif. - Cielo Meza was perfect through four innings, and had plenty of support on the way to her first career no-hitter, as the Beach won 9-0 to close out the series at UC Riverside.
Meza was in control throughout the day, striking out seven and allowing just three walks on the way to the 32nd no-hitter in the history of Long Beach State softball. It was also the fourth shutout of the season for the redshirt freshman and her sixth complete game of the year. After a pair of early chances didn’t come to anything, Long Beach State (21-27-1, 9-9 Big West) finally broke the deadlock in the fourth inning. Sammi Gyerman beat out an infield single, and then Julia Lombardi doubled into the gap, moving to third on the throw to the plate as the Beach took a 1-0 lead. Tierra Falo then reached on an error allowing Lombardi to score. A single from Nichole Fry then brought home Falo from second as the Beach took a 3-0 lead over UC Riverside (26-23, 8-10 Big West)
The Beach added more runs in the top of the fifth. After Lauren MacLeod led off the inning with a walk, Gyerman doubled into the gap, putting two runners in scoring position. Both those runs would come home on a single from Mattie Scheele, and then Scheele herself would score from second on a single from pinch hitter Aniesa Maulupe.
A leadoff double from Cookson led to an additional run in the sixth, as drove a run with her second single of the game. The Beach also tacked on two more runs on a double from Fry in the seventh, who finished with three RBI on the day.
Long Beach State closes out the season with a three-game series on the road at Hawai’i. The first game of that series is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, with a doubleheader to be held on Friday May 12.
