Softball Wraps Up Series Sweep of UC Davis With Extra Inning Victory
May 5, 2013
The Long Beach State softball team (35-20, 17-7) wrapped up Big West Conference play with a series sweep of UC Davis (22-27, 8-13), winning the final contest in an eight inning game on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
It was LBSU's first series win against the Aggies since the 2011 season as the 49ers wrapped up at least second-place in the Big West. The sweep of UC Davis also marks the second series sweep of the season for the 49ers, having previously won three games at UC Riverside in March.
Both Long Beach State and UC Davis battled for seven innings as neither team could get any offense going. The 49ers were able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get a run to score as the game headed into extra innings.
Playing their fifth extra inning game of the season, Long Beach State was able to keep the Aggies scoreless in the top of the inning, putting The Beach back up to bat. Shayna Kimbrough led off with a nice double to center field, which was followed by Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi being walked. After a sacrifice by Hannah De Gaetano, LBSU had runners on second and third bringing up the single season RBI record holder, Darian Tautalafua. After hitting two home runs off of UC Davis on Saturday, the Aggies didn't want to give Tautalafua a chance to hit, so they intentionally walked her. Now with bases loaded and just one out, the 49ers were poised to win the game.
Karli Sandoval, who has hit nine home runs this season, headed to the plate. With the count 0-2, Sandoval was then hit by Aggies pitcher Justine Vela, which brought in the winning run to give LBSU a 1-0 victory.
Erin Jones-Wesley notched her 19th win of the season (19-8), pitching eight innings with five hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
