Sandoval leads 49ers to doubleheader sweep at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Karli Sandoval had five hits to lead Long Beach State to a 5-1 and 5-2 doubleheader sweep of Cal State Fullerton at the Anderson Family Field in Big West Conference action on Saturday.
Sandoval went 5-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored to push Long Beach State (25-22, 13-4 Big West) into sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference with four games to play. The 49ers lead UC Davis (12-6), Pacific (12-6) and UC Santa Barbara (11-6) by two games in the loss column.
Cal State Fullerton (19-28, 7-10 Big West) struggled offensively collecting just nine hits in the two games.
Game 1: Long Beach State 5, Cal State Fullerton 1
Petty (7-1) allowed just three hits over five innings while matching a season-high with nine strikeouts. Jones-Wesley got her third save giving up one run, while fanning three.
Sandoval gave LBSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The 49er catcher tripled off the fence in left center driving in Hannah De Gaetano from first.
Shayna Kimbrough opened the inning with a single before being forced at second on a hard hit by Cya Neal that centerfield Ashley Carter fielded on one hop and got Kimbrough by a step. Neal was forced at second on a nice play by second baseman Adriana Martinez on a ball hit up the middle by De Gaetano.
The 49ers added two runs in the top of the sixth with Bree Stephan's two-out two-RBI bases loaded single doing the damage. Stephan singled up the middle to score pinch runner Emily Gregorio, who was running for Sandoval, and Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi. Sandoval and Tupua-Tautalatasi started the two-out rally with back-to-back singles, before Nalani St. Germain walked to load the bases setting up Stephan's big hit.
After the Titans cut the lead to 3-1 on the ninth home run of the season by Anissa Young, Long Beach State answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-1 lead.
De Gaetano capped the rally with a two-RBI double to right center scoring Kimbrough and Neal. Kimbrough got the rally started when she was hit by a pitch before advancing to third on a double by Neal.
Sandoval and Stephan both went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the 49ers' offense which finished with nine hits. Stephan and De Gaetano each had two RBI.
Game 2: Long Beach State 5, Cal State Fullerton 2
Sandoval and De Gaetano each had three hits to lead the 49ers to a sweep of the doubleheader. St. Germain added two hits and three RBI in the win.
Jones-Wesley (18-12) threw a complete game five-hitter to get the win. She stranded nine Titans on the bases, while striking out two.
Long Beach State jumped out early scoring three runs in the first inning, all with two outs. Tupua-Tautalatasi got the 49ers on the board with a RBI single scoring De Gaetano from second. St. Germain followed with a two-RBI double to right center plating Sandoval and Tupua-Tautalatasi.
Eliza Crawford narrowed the 49er lead to 3-1 with a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth, but LBSU answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 5-1.
Sandoval and St. Germain did the damage again with both of them delivering RBI doubles. Sandoval's drive scored pinch runner Alisha Rosen. St. Germain drove in Sandoval with one-out.
Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton wrap up their three-game series Sunday with a game at 12 p.m.
