NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Alisha Rosen homered in game one of Long Beach State's doubleheader at Cal State Northridge on Saturday helping the 49ers split the two Big West Conference games winning game one 4-3 before losing game two 2-1.
Cal State Northridge (9-33, 4-7 Big West) hosts LBSU in the final game of the three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. at Matador Diamond.
Game 1: Long Beach State 4, Cal State Northridge 3
Rosen sparked a three-run sixth inning rally with a two-run home run to lead the 49ers to the win in game one of a doubleheader against the Matadors.
The 49ers took the early lead scoring a run in the top of the first. Kimbrough, a freshman, singled up the middle driving in pinch runner Emily Gregorio. Hannah De Gaetano led off the inning with a walk, before Gregorio pinch ran, and Neal followed with a base hit to right field.
CSUN answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Alyssa Ray delivered a bases loaded RBI single to right that scored Samantha Sloniker. Jaci Carlsen also came around to score after Nalani St. Germain misplayed the ball.
The 49ers regained the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Rosen hit a two-run home run to centerfield to put the 49ers back on top. Stephan led off the inning with a base hit up the middle and scored on Rosen's second career home run. De Gaetano picked up a two-out RBI single later in the inning scoring Megan Denio who had a two-out hit and a stolen base to get in scoring position.
Northridge added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Taylor Petty (5-1) finished the game allowing just five hits while striking out six.
Neal led LBSU with three hits, while Kimbrough and Stephan had two hits apiece. Rosen finished with two RBI, while De Gaetano and Kimbrough each had one.
Game 2: Cal State Northridge 2, Long Beach State 1
Jessica Fridwall scored the winning run from second base in the bottom of the seventh on a 49er error pushing the Matadors to a win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Fridwall, who singled with one out and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, scored when first baseman Ashlynn Booker couldn't control a throw from Kimbrough at shortstop on a ball hit by Tiffini Lucero.
Lucero lined a single off pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley that Kimbrough scooped up and threw to first. The ball went off the end of the mitt of Booker who was stretching for the ball. Booker was unable to recover allowing Fridwall to score the winning run.
The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a one-out bases loaded sacrifice fly by Booker. LBSU loaded the bases on hits by Tupua-Tautalatasi and Stephan, while Dana Garcia was hit by a pitch.
The Matadors tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI double by Mikayla Thielges scoring Madeline Sale who was on first after being hit by a pitch.
Jones-Wesley (14-12) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on six hits. She struck out four. Shelly Tait (1-4) got the win for the Matadors while scattering five hits.
Tupua-Tautalatasi and Stephan led LBSU with two hits each in the second game.
