Long Beach State (27-17, 9-4) lost its first Big West series of the season on Sunday, falling to Pacific (25-10, 10-4) as the Tigers hit a walk-off home run to win the game, 6-5.
Erin Jones-Wesley started in the circle on Sunday and was faced with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first, but got out of the jam after striking out the final batter. In the top of the second, Ashley Holmes, who hit two home runs during Saturday's game, stepped out of the batter's box, but hopped back in just as the Pacific pitcher tossed the ball and she was able to hit a double to left center field. Dana Garcia then made it to first after an error by the shortstop to put runners on first and second. Both moved to second and third on the next play. Shayna Kimbrough then hit a blooper to left field, which allowed Holmes to score the first run of the game. Garcia rounded third and came hard into home plate and was called safe after the catcher dropped the ball to put the 49ers up 2-0.
Pacific tied the game in the bottom of the second after a throwing error by Garcia. The Tigers had bunted and Garcia tried to throw the runner out at first, but threw the ball all the way to the corner of the field, allowing Pacific to tie the game at two all.
Shayna Kimbrough broke the tie in the top of the fourth with a bomb over the right field fence for her first career home run, bringing in two runs to give the 49ers a 4-2 lead with just one out on the board. LBSU picked up another out, but then Hannah De Gaetano hit another bomb over the right field fence to push the lead to 5-2. Darian Tautalafua then hit a single and advanced to first after a throwing error by the pitcher, prompting a change in the circle for the Tigers. After the pitching change, Karli Sandoval hit a single through the left side to put runners on the corners, but the inning ended after a Nalani St. Germain strike out.
Pacific tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth after a single to right field (5-3) and had runners on first and third. The inning ended with no other damage done after a foul out to Holmes. The 49ers loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but St. Germain popped up to the second baseman to end the LBSU at bat.
The Tigers closed to 5-4 after a double to left field brought in a run in the bottom of the sixth and then tied the game after a single brought in Pacific's fifth run of the game.
Pacific won the game in the bottom of the seventh after a walk-off home run. Jones-Wesley pitched her 12th complete game, while tallying two strikeouts. Her record now stands at 14-7.
The 49ers return home to host Cal State Northridge in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 17. Both games will be broadcasted live on ESPNU beginning at 1:00 pm. The team then hosts UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Apr. 20 (DH starting at 1:00 pm) and Sunday, Apr. 21 (1:00 pm).
