DAVIS, Calif. - Erin Jones-Wesley pitched a three-hit shutout in the second game of a doubleheader while picking up a save in game one to lead Long Beach State to a 4-2 and 3-0 sweep of UC Davis at La Rue Field on Saturday.
Long Beach State (18-20, 6-2 Big West) moved into a first-place tie in the Big West standings with the two wins. The 49ers wrap up the three-game series with UC Davis (15-24, 5-3 Big West) Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1: Long Beach State 4, UC Davis 2
Neal went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Long Beach State to a Big West Conference win over UC Davis in the first game of a doubleheader. Taylor Petty pitched six strong innings to get the win before Jones-Wesley relieved her in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save.
The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Neal drove in pinch runner Emily Gregorio with a RBI single to right center. Megan Denio was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, but was forced at second on a fielder's choice by De Gaetano. Gregorio stole second pinch running for De Gaetano and scored on the hit by Neal.
Long Beach State added three unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Neal and Jennifer Madigan picked up two-out RBI singles, before Neal scored on an error by the first baseman on a ground ball hit by Karli Sandoval. Tupua-Tautalatasi led off the inning with a single to center, and moved to second when Shayna Kimbrough reached on a fielding error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt. Both Tupua-Tautalatasi and Kimbrough came around to score.
Tupua-Tautalatasi had two hits, while Madigan and Nalani St. Germain had one hit apiece. Petty held UC Davis to two hits through six innings before giving up a two-run home run with a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh. She struck out five while moving to 4-1 on the season.
Game 2: Long Beach State 3, UC Davis 0
The 49ers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with three runs, and Jones-Wesley (14-10) struck out eight while allowing just three hits in leading LBSU past the Aggies.
Dana Garcia got the 49ers on the board in the top of the seventh with a RBI double to right center scoring Denio from first to give the 49ers the lead with one out. De Gaetano launched the next pitch over the left field wall, her fourth home run of the season, scoring Garcia to put LBSU on top 3-0.
De Gaetano went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the 49ers.
