Jones-Wesley Dominant In 3-0 One-Hitter
April 13, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Senior Erin Jones-Wesley pitched a one-hit complete game shutout to extend Long Beach State's winning streak to 11 games in a 3-0 win over Hawai'i on Sunday. Shayna Kimbrough was 2-for-3 with an RBI triple to lead the 49ers, who have begun Big West play on a 9-0 tear.
Long Beach State (32-9, 9-0 Big West) started off Sunday's finale with the Rainbow Wahine by picking up a quick run. Kimbrough reach on an error from Hawai'i first baseman Leisha Li'ili'i, and came around to score on an overthrow from shortstop Sarina Jaramillo.
That cushion was more than enough for Jones-Wesley, who followed up an 11-strikeout performance against Hawai'i (19-19, 4-5 Big West) on Saturday with eight more strikeouts. Jaramillo was able to break up the no-hitter with a single to left field in the fifth inning, but that would be the only hit of the game against Jones-Wesley, in one of her better starts of the season against a dangerous Rainbow Wahine lineup.
Kimbrough was able to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi singled to open the frame, Kimbrough ripped a triple down the right field line, scoring Tupua-Tautalatasi. Kimbrough would then score on an RBI single by Cya Neal, who also finished the day with a pair of hits.
Long Beach State returns to action with another important Big West series this week, traveling to Cal State Fullerton for a midweek series with the Titans beginning on Wednesday. The 49ers will start with a Wednesday game at 4 p.m. on ESPNU, and then the doubleheader will be played on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. on ESPN3.
