Softball Opens Series With A 4-2 Win At Hawai'i
LT Torres had a two-run single to lift LBSU to the win.
Honolulu, Hawai'i - Long Beach State got two big hits from unexpected places, as freshman Summer Pohl and LT Torres each came through in a three-run fourth inning that helped the 49ers open their Big West series at Hawai'i with a 4-2 win.
The Beach took an early lead in the first courtesy of a wild play. After a single by Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi, a ground ball hit up the third base line by Lauren Lombardi was overthrown by Kistina Akiona. The return throw from Keiki Carlos in right field then hit the umpire on the way back in, allowing Tupua-Tautalatasi to come home and score for LBSU.
Hawai'i (23-17, 4-3 Big West) tied the game on a solo home run from Keiki Carlos in the third, but the Beach bounced right back in the top of the fourth inning.
Darian Tautalafua and Haley Tobler led off the inning with two straight singles, and Pohl hit a double to put Long Beach State (17-21, 4-3 Big West) back in front and put a pair in scoring position with no outs. Torres was the second freshman to come up with a clutch hit, driving in both runs with a single and giving the Beach a 4-1 lead.
Another solo home run from the Rainbow Wahine cut the Long Beach State lead to 4-2, but that would be all that Christina Clermont would allow in the complete game victory. The sophomore struck out nine UH batters and gave up just three hits.
The series in Honolulu continues Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
