LBSU softball falls to Cal Poly, 2-1, in series finale
April 11, 2009 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Long Beach State softball team was unable to salvage the final game of the series against Cal Poly as it fell, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. With the loss, the 49ers drop to 24-17 overall and 5-4 in Big West Conference action. Despite a strong effort from sophomore Brooke Turner (13-9), who allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits, the LBSU offense was unable to produce. Seniors Danielle Linke and Brianna Goad, and junior Ashley Levine were the only 49ers to find their way into the hit column. Junior Ashley Weber had the lone RBI for The Beach. Long Beach State jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third when Goad led off with a single up the middle. The Mustangs were able to retire sophomore Casey Burba before Linke connected for a base hit, advancing Goad to third. Weber then placed a ground ball to the right side of the infield to score Goad. Cal Poly (28-9, 7-2 BWC) got on the board with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Anna Cahn singled home Stephanie Tam, while Krysten Cary was able to score on the same play after an error by junior Bridgette Pagano. The Beach returns to the field next weekend when it welcomes UC Santa Barbara to the 49er Softball Complex for a three-game series, April 18-19. The two teams will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, which will be televised by ESPNU.
