49ers finish series sweep with 2-1 win over Cal Poly

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Taylor Petty and Erin Jones-Wesley combined on a four-hitter to lead Long Beach State to a 2-1 win over Cal Poly on Saturday in Big West Conference softball action.

The win allowed the 49ers (16-20, 4-2 Big West) to complete a three-game series sweep of the Mustangs (8-25, 1-5 Big West). LBSU also matched a season-high with its third straight win.

Petty (3-1) picked up the win allowing just two hits in four innings. She struck out four to claim her second win of the weekend. Jones-Wesley earned her first save of the season allowing an unearned run on two hits. She fanned three Mustang hitters in three innings.

LBSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third. Megan Denio led off the inning with a triple, before scoring on a wild pitch by Jordan Yates.

The 49ers added another run in the top of the fourth. Nalani St. Germain, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on a one-out error by shortstop Kim Westlund. Shayna Kimbrough hit a grounder to Westlund who committed the error allowing St. Germain to score from third.

Cal Poly climbed within a run in the fifth with an unearned run, but Jones-Wesley finished off the Mustangs to clinch the series sweep.

Cya Neal led the 49ers with two hits, including a triple. Jennifer Madigan, Alisha Rosen and Megan Denio each had one hit.

Long Beach State returns to action next weekend when the 49ers visit UC Davis for a three-game series. The teams play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
