Long Beach, Calif. - After a game two where nothing seemed to go right, Long Beach State could do no wrong Sunday in an 8-0 win in five innings over UC Davis. Christina Clermont pitched a second straight shutout, while Shayna Kimbrough went 4-for-4 and Lauren Lombardi homered in the win for the Beach.

Long Beach State (15-19, 2-1 Big West) got the game going early with a little small ball in the bottom of the first. Kimbrough got the action started with a single, and after a sacrifice and a wild pitch, came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Haley Tobler.

The 49ers tacked on two more in the second inning, taking advantage of some sloppy fielding from UC Davis (12-16, 1-2 Big West). Julia Lombardi led off the inning with a single, and then Darian Tautalafua singled into right center. The Aggies' right fielder didn't field the ball cleanly, allowing both runners and extra base, and the Tautalafua moved to third on a wild throw from center fielder Krista Bava. The 49ers then cashed in that run on an RBI single from Mattie Scheele to take a 3-0 lead.

Scheele knocked in pinch runner Rachel Loera with another sacrifice fly in the third inning, and then Lauren Lombardi crushed a two-run shot over the wall in center field in the fourth inning to make the score 6-0.

After Tautalafua reached on an error in the fifth, Summer Pohl was plunked to put two runners on. A single by Kimbrough, her fourth of the day, brought home one run, and then another base hit from Irma Sanchez scored Pohl from third to end the game.

Clermont didn't have eye-popping strikeout numbers but was very effective in the circle, scattering three hits to collect her fourth shutout of the year.

The Beach will now play two straight series on the road, continuing Big West play over the next two weeks at UC Riverside and at Hawai'i.
