Softball Falls In Final Game In Santa Clara 10-2 To Northwestern
Long Beach State goes 4-1 at the Santa Clara Invitational.
Santa Clara, Calif. - Long Beach State bounced back from an early deficit against Northwestern, but the team’s bid to go 5-0 on the weekend came up short as the Wildcats pulled away late in a 10-2 loss.
Northwestern (9-14) scored first, getting a run across in the first inning. With one on and two outs, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Wildcats, and then a single up the middle brought home one run, the first of the game to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats added one more in the third inning without a hit. Loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter, a wild pitch from Clermont brought home a run. Jessica Flores came on and got two outs to get the Beach out of the inning.
Long Beach State (11-17-1) pulled even in the bottom of the third. Singles from Sammi Gyerman and Nichole Fry got the Beach started, and after a walk to Rachel Loera loaded the bases, Hannah Cookson singled to bring home both runners in scoring position and tie the game at 2-2.
Maddie Newport struck out Tierra Falo to end the threat, and only allowed two hits the rest of the way, picking up the win as Northwestern pulled ahead in the next inning.
Krista Williams led off the inning with a single off of Flores, and then a bunt single put two runners on for Northwestern. A walk loaded the bases, and while a sacrifice fly led to the second out of the inning, a triple from Brooke Marquez added two more as Northwestern took a 5-2 lead.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth inning, and three more in the seventh after drawing two walks to start the final inning.
Gyerman had two hits for the Beach, while Fry, Julia Lombardi and Cookson all had a hit in all five games this weekend in Santa Clara.
Long Be ach State will take the next week off, and return to action March 28 with a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount at the LBSU Softball Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
