Bats Come Alive For Softball In 10-4 Win At Santa Clara
Long Beach State piles up a season high 16 hits in the victory.
Santa Clara, Calif. - Aniesa Maulupe went 4-for-5, leading five Long Beach State players with multiple hits as the Beach went on to defeat Santa Clara on the road 10-4. With the win, the Beach improved to 4-0 at the Santa Clara Invitational.
Santa Clara (7-16) struck first to take an early lead in the second inning. With two outs, Kelsie Barnard walked and then came around to score on a double from Gianetta France.
Christina Clermont would finish with seven strikeouts on the day while throwing 5.1 innings, earning her fifth win of the season while holding the Broncos to the one run over the first five innings.
After four hits over the first four innings, Long Beach State (11-16-1) broke through in the fifth. Lauren MacLeod hit the second of her three singles to start the inning, and then Sammi Gyerman and Nichole Fry both reached on infield bunts to load the bases.
An error by the catcher on the next play allowed two runs to come home, and then an RBI single from Hannah Cookson gave the Beach a 3-1 lead.
Mattie Scheele and MacLeod singled to start the sixth as the Beach put together another big inning. Gyerman kept the hits coming with an RBI single, and then Fry hit a two-run triple to extend the lead. A walk to Tierra Falo put runners on the corners, and then RBI singles from Julia Lombardi and Maulupe made the score 8-1.
Santa Clara scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the lead to five runs, but Long Beach State answered by scoring two of their own in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run double from Lombardi.
Jessica Flores allowed one run in the bottom of the seventh, but battled through to finish off the game in the circle, as Clermont collected the win, her fifth of the season.
Long Beach State finishes off the non-conference portion of tournament play tomorrow with one more game in Santa Clara, playing Northwestern one final time at 9 a.m.
