Softball Stays Unbeaten In Santa Clara With 7-1 Win Over Lehigh
Hannah Cookson finished 3-for-4 with a double and a triple.
Santa Clara, Calif. - Long Beach State grabbed an early lead and kept chipping away at Lehigh, pulling away for a 7-1 win in the first of two games for the Beach on Saturday. Hannah Cookson went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while scoring three times.
Lehigh (7-14) tied the game with an unearned run in the second inning, and then Long Beach State took the lead for good in the fourth inning.
Cookson led off the inning with a triple, and following a walk to Tierra Falo, a grounder to the right side allowed Cookson to score safely and put the Beach in front for good. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, an RBI groundout from Lauren MacLeod extended the LBSU lead to 3-1.
Lombardi led off the sixth inning with a single as the Beach broke the game open. Falo was plunked and LT Torres walked to load the bases, and after an error brought home one run, a two-run double from MacLeod brought in two more, giving Long Beach State a 6-1 lead as MacLeod finished the day with three RBI.
The Beach added one more run in support of Devyn Magnett, who earned her fourth win of the season, allowing four hits and striking out one with one unearned run.
Long Beach State will next face the tournament hosts, Santa Clara, in a game that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
