Rally Falls Just Short As Illinois Beats Long Beach State 5-4

Santee, Calif. - Long Beach State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to push across the tying run in a 5-4 loss to Illinois on Friday.

Julia Lombardi went 3-for-4 with an RBI on the double as her hot streak continued at the plate against the Illini.

Illinois (15-7) scored first, putting a pair across in the third inning. Ruby Rivera led off the inning with a walk, and after Christina Clermont picked up two outs, and error from Nichole Fry extended the inning, and Alyssa Gunther made the 49ers pay with a two-run double.

Long Beach State (17-10) was able to tie the game, taking advantage of some Illinois errors in the fifth inning. Fry was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and then two straight errors brought home Fry to get the Beach on the scoreboard. Back-to-back walks first loaded the bases and then brought home a second run, but the rally ended on a Darian Tautalafua groundout with the game tied at two.

Illinois pushed out in front for good with a three-run sixth inning. Clermont hit Carly Thomas to open the inning, followed by a Gunther single and a one-out walk to load the bases. An RBI groundout put Illinois back in the lead, and then a two-run single from Stephanie Abello made the score 5-2 in favor of the Illini.

The Beach mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh. Haley Tobler drew a one-out walk, followed by a single from Tierra Falo to bring the tying run to the plate. A sacrifice fly scored one run, followed by an RBI double from Lombardi to put the tying run in scoring position.

 

 

A groundout from Fry ended the opportunity for Long Beach State, who came up one run short in the 5-4 loss.

Long Beach State is back in action this afternoon against another ranked opponent, taking on No. 22 Fresno State at 2 p.m.
