Lauren MacLeod’s Grand Slam Leads Softball To 5-2 Win Over Grand Canyon
Long Beach State opens their time in Santa Clara with a victory.
Santa Clara, Calif. - Long Beach State got it done with the long ball, as Lauren MacLeod’s second inning grand slam and a Tierra Falo solo homer provided the scoring in a 5-2 win over Grand Canyon in the first of five games for the Beach in Santa Clara.
Freshman Devyn Magnett finished off her third complete game of the season in the win for Long Beach State (8-16-1), scattering five hits while earning her third win of the season. Meanwhile, Taylor Nowlin struck out seven 49ers for Grand Canyon (23-5), but the Beach finished with ten hits including the two home runs.
The Beach struck first in the second inning. Julia Lombardi singled to start the rally, and after Falo reached on an error by GCU third baseman Sierra Smith with two outs, Long Beach State pounced on the mistake. LT Torres singled to keep the inning going, loading the bases for MacLeod, who hit her first career grand slam to put Long Beach State in front 4-0.
Falo added an insurance run in the fifth inning, extending her team lead with her third home run of the season, scoring for the second time Friday. Sammi Gyerman continued her hot streak, finishing with a pair of hits on the day, as did Lombardi and MacLeod.
Tournament play continues Friday morning for Long Beach State, who face Northwestern at 11:30 a.m.
