Big Inning Hurts Softball In Loss To Texas

March 15, 2017

Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State scrapped to a 1-0 lead over Texas through five innings, but a 10-run sixth inning got away from the Beach and Texas went on to win 10-1 in six innings.

Both teams traded early threats. Texas (14-10) picked up two third inning singles to put a runner in scoring position, and then a walk to Reagan Hathaway loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly ball to center field was coolly handled to Sammi Gyerman to end the threat.

In the next inning, Long Beach State (7-16-1) threatened as well. Julia Lombardi drew a leadoff walk, and Hannah Cookson followed with a single to put two on. Texas starter Brooke Bolinger picked up an out, but a walk to pinch hitter Aniesa Maulupe loaded the bases with one out. A popup and a grounder later the score remained 0-0 however through four innings.

Long Beach State would finally break through in the next inning. Gyerman reached for the third time on the day with her second single to open the fifth, and after moving to second on a wild pitch, the speedy senior scored on an RBI single from Julia Lombardi.

Problems for the Beach started right away in the sixth inning however. Clermont, who had struck out three and allowed three hits over the first five innings, walked the leadoff batter. A sacrifice led the first out of the inning, but two straight RBI doubles gave Texas the lead and the momentum, as ten consecutive batters would reach before Jessica Flores was able to collect the second out of the inning.

With the damage done after the 10-run inning, Long Beach State was retired in order by Tiarra Davis in the bottom of the sixth inning and Texas closed out the run-rule victory.

Long Beach State will hit the road this weekend for the team’s final tournament of the non-conference schedule. The Beach will participate in the Santa Clara Invitational, facing Grand Canyon, Northwestern, Lehigh and the host Broncos in five games starting 9 a.m. on Friday.
