Lombardi's Grand Slam Leads 49ers Past UT Arlington
March 14, 2014
Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman Lauren Lombardi scored the first run of the game for Long Beach State, cutting an early UT Arlington lead to 2-1, and then put the 49ers on top for good with a sixth inning grand slam as part of the 6-2 win for The Beach.
UT Arlington (13-12) struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Two singles put a pair of Mavericks on base, and a double by Marisa Datko scored both. However, those were three of the five hits that Amanda Hansen would allow in a complete game performance, striking out five.
The comeback for the 49ers began in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Lombardi started the inning by hitting a double down the left-field line. Giving way to Alexie Johnson as a pinch runner back-to-back singles by Sarah Carrasco and Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi allowed Johnson to come home for the first run of the game.
Two straight Long Beach State (17-7) singles from Karli Sandoval and Ashley Holmes chased UTA starter Shannon Carrico out of the game in the sixth inning. Callie Collins came in and walked Darian Tautalafua, and then Lombardi homered to dead center, the first grand slam of the season for Long Beach State, putting the 49ers in front 5-2. Shayna Kimbrough singled and stole second after the homer, coming home on a Cya Neal single to account for the final score.
Long Beach State plays one more game Friday, taking on the host Aztecs at 6 p.m. San Diego State was receiving votes in both polls to start the week.
