Softball Rallies To Beat Iowa State In the Bottom Of The Seventh, 5-4
Tierra Falo’s walkoff single proves to be the difference against the Cyclones.
Lakewood, Calif. - Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Long Beach State made the most of some wildness from Iowa State’s Savannah Sanders, scoring three runs and winning the game on a walkoff single from freshman Tierra Falo.
Alley Perkins led off the seventh inning with a single, and after a popup, the troubles continued for Sanders, who had pitched in relief since the first inning with a walk to Nichole Fry. A flyout from Lauren MacLeod led to the second out, but Sanders would walk Darian Tautalafua to load the bases.
Long Beach State (14-8) had trailed throughout, as Iowa State (12-10) scored three runs in the first inning on a three-run home run from Kelsey McFarland.
Iowa State starter Brianna Weilbacher got off to a rough start as well, however, walking a pair of 49ers who both scored on a single from Tautalafua and a double from Tobler also in the first inning.
Christina Clermont settled in well after the first inning, working around a small jam in the third before the Cyclones pushed across one more run in the seventh after a leadoff single from Sammie Hildreth, setting the stage for the LBSU comeback.
Long Beach State will play its final two games of the Louisville Slugger Invitational tomorrow at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. First, the Beach hosts No. 14 UCLA at 12:30 p.m., and then wraps the tournament with a 3 p.m. game against Princeton.
