March 8, 2008

LAKEWOOD, Calif. - Brooke Turner tossed her second consecutive three-hit shutout, and the Long Beach State bats came alive on Saturday as the 49ers defeated eighth-ranked Northwestern 8-0 in five innings at the Long Beach Invitational. The 49ers improve to 14-7 with the win, while the Wildcats fall to 12-5.

Whitney Radcliffe was 2-for-2 with a walk and Jessica Beaver ended a five-run fifth inning with a two-run single to seal the victory for Long Beach State. Danielle Linke was 1-2 with two runs scored, a triple and two RBI, as Long Beach used six hits and nine walks to score their eight runs.

Turner (10-2), who won on Friday night over Notre Dame with a three-hitter, struck out four batters on Saturday while scattering three hits. Julie Smith (2-2) took the loss for the Wildcats.

The 49ers got off strong in the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Beaver was hit by a pitch to begin the game and then Brianna Goad and Lacy Tyler followed with walks. One out later, Goad scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. The second run, in the form of Tyler, also scored on a wild pitch.

The 49ers scored a single run in the fourth as Franciska Morlet walked with the bases-loaded to make the score 3-0.

In the fifth the 49ers began the five-run rally with one out. Walks to Griffin and Brooke LeSage put 49ers on first and second. Linke then tripled down the leftfield line, scoring both runners. Linke scored on a single by Ashley Weber, and then after Radcliffe got on base with her second hit of the day, Beaver lashed a single to left to score both runs and end the contest.

The 49ers continue play on Sunday as they take on Rutgers at 9 am and UCLA at 1:30 pm. Both games will be played at Mayfair Park.
