Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's home opener in 2018 featured a pair of ranked teams, and while the Beach took a 2-1 lead, a big third inning carried No. 12 Baylor to a 5-2 win Tuesday afternoon.

Julia Lombardi had a pair of hits on the day, and played a part in giving Long Beach State (16-5) the lead in the second inning.

It was Baylor (12-3) that struck first, though, scoring in the top of the first inning. Jessie Scroggins walked with one out, and after stealing second, scored on a double from Goose McGlaun to put the Bears on top 1-0.

LBSU answered in the bottom half, as Gia Rodoni started the game a little wild, walking both Nichole Fry and Naomi Hernandez to put two on. Jamie Wren moved the runners over with a groundout, and then slick running from Fry saw the junior score on a dribbler from Taylor Rowland, tying the game in the first without a hit.

Lombardi had the first hit of the game for the Beach, and it was a big one, a double into the gap to lead off the second inning. After Lombardi advanced to third on a passed ball, a sacrifice fly from Grayce Majam put the 49ers in front 2-1.

Baylor had the final answer however with a big third inning from the top of the order. Nicky Dawson drew a leadoff walk, and was pushed over to second with a sacrifice. Shelby Friudenberg doubled to bring Dawson across, and then a two-run home run by McGlaun gave Baylor a 4-2 lead.

The Bears pushed another run across in the fourth, and Rodoni kept Long Beach State off the scoreboard the rest of the way in the 5-2 victory.

Long Beach State continues a busy week at the LBSU Softball Complex with the start of the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Thursday. The Beach will face Michigan State and Boston on that first day, and then play Friday, Saturday and Sunday over the four-day tournament.
