Fullerton, Calif. - Long Beach State put two runners on in the seventh inning to bring the winning run to the plate against South Carolina, but the Gamecocks held on for a 4-2 win in the final game of the tournament for the Beach.

Long Beach State (6-10-1) struck first, working across a run in the third inning. Rachel Loera drew a one-out walk, and after a single from Nichole Fry, Loera sped around to beat the throw to the plate on a single from Sammi Gyerman.

A solo home run from Taylor Williams tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, and then South Carolina (16-5) took the lead on an RBI double from Kaylea Snear.

South Carolina tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, but the Beach pulled one back in the fifth. Lauren MacLeod earned a leadoff walk, and following Rachel Loera’s second hit of the day, Fry dropped a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over. The move paid off as a snap throw to third base sailed wide, allowing pinch runner Andrea Guzman to score on the error and cutting the lead to 4-2.

Long Beach State would make one more push in the seventh inning with a two-out rally. MacLeod singled to put a runner on, and a single from Gyerman put two on base for Aniesa Maulupe. Relief pitcher Nickie Blue was able to finish off the save by getting a groundout from the freshman to end the day for the Beach.

Long Beach State will host its major tournament of the season starting on Thursday, March 9. All games of the Louisville Slugger Invitational will be played on campus at the LBSU Softball Complex, with play beginning for the 49ers on Thursday, at 11:30 a.m. against Boston University.
