March 5, 2017

Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - Tierra Falo and Nichole Fry both hit home runs at critical times for Long Beach State, giving the Beach the lift they needed on the way to a 5-4 win over Indiana.

Long Beach State (6-9-1) threatened early, but did not score as Hoosier starter Tara Trainer escaped a bases loaded jam in the first and allowing a pair of hits in the second.

Indiana (6-12) would strike first despite Jessica Flores moving quickly for the first two innings. Katie Lacefield started the third inning with a single, and after two infield singles loaded the bases, a fielder’s choice brought home the first run of the game.

A double play on a hard hit liner from CaraMia Tsirigos helped the Beach get out of the inning, and Indiana held a 1-0 lead through four innings.

Fry got the fifth inning started with her second hit of the day, a single through the left side, and Sammi Gyerman reached via an error to put two on in front of Falo, who crushed a home run to left to give Long Beach State a 3-1 lead.

Indiana answered back with a three-run bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases with no outs, singles from Tsirigos and Uden brought home three runs to give the Hoosiers a 4-3 lead. Devyn Magnett entered in relief for the Beach and struck out Rachel O’Malley for the second out, and then a grounder ended the inning.

Fry’s first home run of the season, a solo shot, tied the game in the sixth, and then the Beach took the lead in the seventh. After a Hannah Cookson single, LT Torres reached on an infield single, and then a Mattie Scheele grounder was just outside of the reach of the shortstop, allowing pinch runner Jessica Nogosek to score what would be the winning run.

Magnett picked up two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, and after a double, closed out the game for her second win of the season, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Long Beach State will close their time at the Judi Garman Classic with one more game, facing South Carolina in a game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
