St. Germain's three-run homerun leads 49ers past No. 23 Houston

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Nalani St. Germain hit a three-run home run in the first inning and two Long Beach State pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout to lead the 49ers past No. 23 Houston 3-0 Friday in the Campbell/Cartier Classic at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
St. Germain blasted her team-best fourth homer with two outs in the top of the first inning to spot Long Beach State (11-6) to a three-run lead over Houston (15-5). Bree Stephan started the rally with a lead-off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Denio. Caitrin DeBaun walked to put runners on first and second, and one out later St. Germain came through with the heroics. St. Germain finished with both of LBSU's hits in the game, adding a single in the third inning.
Brooke Turner (3-1) got her second win of the weekend pitching the final four innings allowing just two hits while striking out four. Taylor Petty got the start and allowed just one hit while striking out six in three innings.
Long Beach State wraps up tournament play Saturday with two games against nationally-ranked teams. The 49ers face Fresno State at 1:30 p.m. and then tangle with Baylor at 3:45 p.m.
