No. 22 Softball Holds Off Oregon State To Leave San Diego Classic 4-1
Long Beach State will now play eight straight games at home over the next two weeks.
San Diego, Calif. - No. 22 Long Beach State jumped out to an early lead against Oregon State and held on to claim a fourth victory of the tournament, defeating the Beavers 3-2. Sophomore Devyn Magnett was sparkling in relief, throwing four scoreless innings to get the win.
Long Beach State (16-4) capitalized on a critical error by the Beavers in the second inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs and three total to take an early lead. With two outs and a runner on, Nichole Fry doubled to left field to put a run on the board. Naomi Hernandez also went to left field in the next at-bat, and an error from Shelby Weeks brought home Fry while leaving Hernandez in scoring position.
Jamie Wren followed with an RBI single as the Beach took a 3-0 lead. Oregon State (11-8) recovered in the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs. After a single and hit batter put two on with no outs, back-to-back RBI singles from Alysha Everett and Missy Nunez had the Beavers within one run.
Magnett came on in relief, working out of the jam in short order and pitched three additional hitless innings to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Long Beach State will face No. 8 Baylor on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the team's home opener before once again playing host to the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The annual tournament for the Beach will run from Thursday, March 8 through Sunday, March 11 and feature multiple games each day.
