Cielo Meza Throws Second Career No-Hitter In 1-0 Win Over No. 21 Minnesota
Meza struck out 11 with one walk in the 27th no-hitter in school history.
San Diego, Calif. - Cielo Meza saved one of her best starts in her career for a big moment, striking out 11 Golden Gophers on the way to a no-hitter against No. 21 Minnesota. With the win No. 22 Long Beach State picked up its third victory over a ranked foe this season.
Meza allowed just one baserunner on the day, a walk to Carlie Brandy in the sixth inning. Meza struck out the side in the first inning, struck out five of the first six batters, and had only four batters hit a ball out of the infield.
Long Beach State (15-4) fared a little batter against Minnesota (11-6) starter Amber Fiser. LBSU compiled five hits on the day, including two from LT Torres who had a double, a single, and a hit-by-pitch, reaching base all three times she came to the plate.
Torres played a role in putting the Beach in front with her single, coming in the fifth inning. Keeping the inning alive with two outs, Nichole Fry then hit her second triple of the season, driving in Torres for the game's only run.
The Brandt walk was the only baserunner of the sixth for Minnesota however, and Meza set down the Golden Gophers in order in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 9-0 on the season.
No. 22 Long Beach State will play one more game in San Diego, taking on Oregon State at approximately 7 p.m. weather-permitting. Live stats will be available at www.beachlivestats.com.
