49ers drop two at SDSU softball tournament

SANTEE, Calif. - Long Beach State dropped a pair of games Saturday at the San Diego Classic. The 49ers lost to 2-1 to BYU before falling 5-1 to Charlotte.

Long Beach State (7-14) wraps up the tournament Sunday against San Diego State.

Game 1: BYU 2, Long Beach State 1

Carly Duckworth had a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cougars a 2-1 win over the 49ers.

Duckworth's hit came with runners at the corners and one out off of Christian Carbajal (0-4), who gave up just two runs in 6.1 innings.

The game was a pitcher's dual between Carbajal and BYU's Hannah Powell. The two pitchers both kept the other team scoreless through the first five innings.

LBSU took the lead in the top of the sixth on a RBI double by Ashlynn Booker that scored Hannah De Gaetano, who started the rally with a one-out single.

BYU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Stacie Toney setting up the seventh inning heroics by Duckworth.

Megan Denio led LBSU with two of the team's five hits, while Carbajal struck out six and scattered seven hits.

Game 2: Charlotte 5, Long Beach State 1

Charlotte (9-8) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to hand Long Beach State a 5-1 defeat in Saturday's late game.

Erin Jones-Wesley (7-6) allowed five runs on nine hits to take the loss. Karli Sandoval had two of Long Beach State's five hits, including a solo home run in the third inning.
