Lakewood, Calif. - Erin Jones-Wesley and Amanda Hansen had nearly identical pitching lines, each throwing a complete-game three hit shutout with five strikeouts as Long Beach State grabbed two wins Thursday in the Louisville Slugger Invitational. The 49ers started with a 4-0 win over Nevada, and then defeated Utah Valley 8-0 in six innings.
Erin Jones-Wesley got the action going for The Beach Thursday. Jones-Wesley went three innings before giving up her first hit, and was supported by early offense from the 49ers.
Long Beach State (11-6) capitalized on the first of three errors from Nevada third baseman Amanda Weis, scoring an unearned run in the first inning after an RBI single by Karli Sandoval. The 49ers pushed across a second unearned run in the second, and then Darian Tautalafua hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to open up a 3-0 lead. The 49ers tacked on one more run in the fifth accounting for the 4-0 final. Tautalafua led the way with two hits and two runs scored.
In game two, the 49ers manufactured an early run after a single from Shayna Kimbrough and a stolen base followed by a pair of groundouts. Kimbrough came through again for Long Beach State with a two-run triple in the second inning, and Long Beach State put up another crooked number with a two-run homer from Ashlynn Booker.
Singles from Leilani Tupua-Tautalatasi and Cya Neal put runners on in front of Sandoval in the bottom of the sixth against Utah Valley, and the senior doubled to increase the Long Beach State lead to 8 and close out the game. Hansen recorded her second complete-game shutout of the year, and struck out five while allowing just one walk on a very efficient 76 pitches.
Weather permitting, the Louisville Slugger Invitational continues Friday with three games each at both the 49er Softball Complex on the Long Beach State campus and at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. Long Beach State will close out the day's action against No. 6 UCLA at 7 p.m. in Mayfair Park.
