Maulupe Leads Softball To 7-4 Win Over Oregon State
Long Beach State’s freshman drives in four RBI in the win.
Palm Springs, Calif. - Newcomers carried the day for Long Beach State Friday against Oregon State, as Aniesa Maulupe went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Jessica Flores scored three times, reaching base in all four plate appearances as the Beach dropped the Beavers 7-4.
Nichole Fry also went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk as the trio of Fry, Maulupe and Flores combined to hit 6-for-8 with four walks to lead Long Beach State (5-5-1) past Oregon State (6-3).
Fry once again got the Beach off to a quick start, leading off the game with a single. The sophomore would then come around to score after a walk to Flores and an RBI single from Maulupe. A walk to Tierra Falo loaded the bases, and then an Oregon State throwing error to the plate allowed Flores to score, putting LBSU out in front 2-0 after the first inning.
After bringing eight batters to the plate in the first inning, Long Beach State picked right back up in the second. Lauren MacLeod led off the inning with a single, and after a walk to Fry, Flores and Maulupe came through once again with two straight RBI hits to put the Beach in front 4-0.
Adding an unearned run in the third inning, the Beach absorbed a solo home run in the fifth from Alysha Everett and extended their lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth. The same hitters came through once more, as Fry led off the inning with a double, Flores walked and then Maulupe singled to bring home both to set the 49ers up with a large cushion.
Christina Clermont surrendered three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but finished off the game earn her fourth win of the season in her third complete game this year, striking out four with no walks.
The Beach will play one more game Friday night, facing No. 7 LSU in the team’s final game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
