Long Beach State Falls To Oklahoma State 6-4 In Palm Springs Opener
The Beach cashed in two early opportunities but came up just short.
Palm Springs, Calif. - Two triples helped Long Beach State get off to a fast start against Oklahoma State, but the Cowgirls rallied to come from behind with a four-run sixth inning as Oklahoma State won 6-4 in the first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic for the Beach.
That lead would hold temporarily for the Beach as Christina Clermont scattered three hits over the first three innings but, Oklahoma State (6-5) tied the game in the fourth inning, as Jessi Haffner singled with one out, and Randee O’Donnell evened the score with an RBI double.
Long Beach State would answer back with a big fifth inning. Lauren MacLeod started the frame with a leadoff walk, and after an error, another single from Torres would load the bases for the Beach. Freshman Aniesa Maulupe then delivered the big hit of the day for LBSU, a bases-clearing triple that put Long Beach State out in front 4-1.
OSU chipped away with a run in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one on a bases-loaded single from Haffner, and then pulled in front for the first time in the sixth. Maddi Holcomb started the inning with a single, and the Cowgirls pulled within one with an RBI single from Vanessa Shippy. Oklahoma State then took the lead for the first time with a two-run single from Taylor Lynch, and added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Hayleigh Galvan.
Long Beach State would threaten once more in the seventh inning, but the team’s timely hitting finally ran out. Torres walked with one out, which was followed by singles from Summer Pohl and Maulupe to load the bases, but a popup from Julia Lombardi and a strikeout from Sammi Gyerman ended the game as reliever Logan Simunek collected the save.
